Sep 06, 2019

Last Wednesday, we announced that Jane Hyun, author of the seminal book on Asian American leadership, Breaking the Bamboo Ceiling, will be speaking alongside Dr. Mathew Park, an Organizational Psychologist and Diversity & Inclusion Trainer, at the Empower Summit (November 1-2) in Washington, DC.

This week, we're excited to announce some of our confirmed workshops related to leadership, one of seven tracks that we will explore at the Empower Summit:

  • An Inside Look: The Road to Elected Office
  • Leaning In: Asian American Women in Leadership
  • Making it to the Top: Stories from Corporate Leaders

Stay tuned for next week’s announcement on Communications track workshops, led by reporters from the New York Times, Washington Post, The Hill, and representatives from the Asian American Journalists Association who will coach you on how to be heard in the news media.

See you at Empower Summit!

The Empower Summit will include 21 unique workshops, divided along seven tracks. Check out some of our confirmed workshops on the Leadership track:

An Inside Look: The Road to Elected Office

An Inside Look: The Road to Elected Office. This workshop will look at how to run for office, whether it is local, state, or federal level, and how we can support more Korean Americans seeking public office. Confirmed Speakers include Mark Keam, Delegate of Virginia House of Delegates (35th District) and Daniel Cho, Assistant Executive Director of New York City Campaign Finance Board.

Leaning In: Asian American Women in Leadership

Leaning In: Asian American Women in Leadership. This workshop will explore how Asian American women are faring in America. Are women of color represented in c-suites and in leadership roles within our government? Has there been meaningful progress toward greater representation? Our speakers will explore how they’ve overcome challenges to rise in leadership roles, and how to deal with discrimination and experiences of being the only woman in the room. Confirmed Speakers include Susan Kim, CEO of Edmodo and Jocelyn Hong, Principal at Jocelyn Hong and Associates, LLC.

Making it to the Top: Stories from Corporate Leaders

Making it to the Top: Stories from Corporate Leaders. This workshop will explore how to rise to the top of corporate leadership and lessons learned along the way. What relationships do you need to sustain during this journey? How do you advocate for yourself in a competitive environment? Are there cultural barriers that inhibit us from making the best case for promotions? Confirmed speakers includes Julian Ha, Partner at Heidrick & Struggles and 2-3 additional corporate leaders.
